Tony Montana: The Newest NATO Analyst
So apparently NATO is having some funding issues. That's like me running out of coke—unthinkable! NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg finally admits that some members have been underfinancing the coalition's defense budget. A little late to the party don't you think Jens?
Trump's Controversial Remarks Stir Up Trouble
Oh Donny boy what have you done? The man himself Donald Trump made some controversial remarks about not protecting NATO nations if they don't cough up their membership payments. You know what they say Don 'The only thing that matters is what's on that little piece of green paper.' But man oh man did the international community get riled up. Even fellow Republicans were shaking their heads. Jens Stoltenberg didn't hold back either saying that Trump's suggestion 'undermines all our security.' Ouch!
Stoltenberg Plays Defense
"The criticism that you hear is not primarily about NATO it's about NATO allies not spending enough on NATO. And that's a valid point," Stoltenberg said. Well Jens welcome to the party. It's not just a valid point it's a damn obvious point! Successive U.S. administrations have been saying the same thing. European allies and Canada need to cough up more dough because we haven't seen fair burden sharing in the alliance. Better late than never I guess.
NATO Allies Step Up
Surprisingly it seems some of these NATO allies are starting to step up their game. Stoltenberg mentioned that he expects a record 18 allies to meet their military spending goal this year. Now that's some progress! It's like when I decided to go clean and get my shit together. These guys better not let me down!
Germany Leads the Way
Ah Germany. Europe's largest economy. They're finally putting their money where their mouth is. Allocating a whopping 71.8 billion euros to defense? Now that's impressive. I just hope they spend it wisely unlike some people I know.
Not Everyone is Pulling Their Weight
But let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Stoltenberg made it clear that some allies still have a long way to go. That 2% spending goal? It's just the bare minimum. Come on guys you can do better than that! Don't make me come over there and give you a little motivational speech.
