Concerns rise as zombie companies in Japan pose a risk to the stock market rally

Zombie Apocalypse in the Stock Market

Japan's stock markets have been on a stellar run since the start of 2023 but lurking in the shadows are "zombie" firms that could put an end to the party. These unprofitable businesses are teetering on the brink of collapse unable to invest or grow their capital. With rising concerns of bankruptcy and bailouts the stock market rally is under threat.

Riding the Waves of Free Cash

These zombie companies have been around for a while just like the Covenant lurking in space. They survived by relying on the Bank of Japan's "epic liquidity programs" that kept the free cash flowing. But as the tide starts to recede thanks to the BOJ's shifting stance on interest rates these companies are at risk of drowning.

COVID 19 Accelerates the Zombification

Just like the Flood spreading across the galaxy the COVID 19 pandemic accelerated the problem of zombie firms in Japan. The number of these undead businesses increased by nearly a third between 2021 and 2022. The zombie apocalypse was fueled by "zero zero" loans that provided virtually interest free support to struggling companies.

BOJ's Dilemma: To Hike or Not to Hike?

The Bank of Japan faces a tough decision as interest rates rise. If they let rates go up the zombie companies that relied on interest free loans will face higher borrowing costs and may collapse. But if they keep rates low they risk jeopardizing the stock market bull run. It's a catch 22 situation that not even a Spartan like Master Chief can solve easily.

Are the Zombie Fears Overblown?

While there are concerns about the zombie firms causing a broader economic fallout not everyone agrees. Julius Baer believes that large cap companies in Japan have enough cash reserves to weather the storm. They argue that these cash rich companies will be able to pay off their debts even with rising interest rates. It's like having shields to protect against the Covenant's attacks.

The Battle for Financial Stability

As the battle for financial stability intensifies the BOJ must decide whether to be the hero or the spoiler. Will they risk triggering the collapse of zombie companies to save the stock market? Or will they continue pumping money into the system to maintain the status quo? Only time and maybe a little luck will reveal the ultimate fate of Japan's economy.
