A First for Nationalists

In a historic move Sinn Fein's Michelle O'Neill has become Northern Ireland's first ever nationalist first minister raising hopes of a potential Irish reunification referendum within the next decade. Talk about shaking things up!

Partners in Power

O'Neill's appointment comes after the Northern Ireland Assembly reconvened for the first time in two years following a deal between the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) and the British government. O'Neill takes the top spot while Emma Little Pengelly of the DUP is appointed deputy first minister. It's like a power sharing buddy system but with rival political parties. Who said Northern Ireland can't play nice?

Divided Island

Just in case you didn't know Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland are like neighbors with a divided house. Northern Ireland belongs to the U.K. while the Republic is its own independent nation and part of the EU. It's like living next door to your ex and pretending everything's fine but deep down you both secretly want reunification. Awkward!

Out with the Old In with the New

Traditionally Northern Ireland's first minister has always been from a British unionist party but Sinn Fein changed the game by winning the most seats in the assembly in 2022. The DUP threw a bit of a tantrum and boycotted the assembly for two years. But now that they're back together let's hope they can make it work. It's like the real life Ross and Rachel of politics.

Border Poll Debates

With a nationalist taking the top seat at Stormont the question of Irish reunification is on everyone's mind. The U.K. government however insists that a border poll is not happening anytime soon. But O'Neill disagrees calling this a 'decade of opportunity.' It's like a game of 'Will they/Won't they?' but with higher stakes.

Irish Unity or Nah?

Sinn Fein has always had its sights set on Irish unity but its ties to the IRA have always cast a shadow over its political aspirations. O'Neill's family history adds another layer to the complexity. Her dad was an IRA prisoner turned Sinn Fein councillor and her cousin was killed in an ambush by the SAS. Talk about family drama!
